Knowji 2014 – The Story So Far

So far, 2014 has been an incredibly busy and productive year for Knowji:

Knowji featured by Apple (again!)
It’s awesome to see that Apple have chosen to feature Knowji again in the App Store! For Spring/Summer of 2014, Apple have chosen to feature Knowji SAT Top 500 in the Education Test Prep section of the U.S. App Store. We work very hard to build world-class apps, and so we’re incredibly pleased to see our effort rewarded by Apple’s attention.

Knowji featured by Rackspace
Back in 2013, Knowji was selected by Rackspace to be a part of its Startup Program. Rackspace is Gartner’s 2013 leader in Managed Hosting, and a global leader in hybrid cloud. We’re absolutely thrilled to have been chosen to be in the program. Things got even better in February when Rackspace featured Knowji in the Rackspace Startup Program spotlight!

Knowji AWL+ for Chinese ESL students launch
Summer 2014 saw the release of our first bilingual app – Knowji AWL+ for Chinese ESL students. It is designed to close the “word gap” and help immigrants learn words that are commonly used in academic environments. Localized into Traditional and Simplified Chinese and designed for native Chinese speakers learning English, it features over 1000 words from the AWL (Academic Word List) which was developed at the world renowned School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria Univ. of Wellington, New Zealand. We launched Knowji AWL+ app in collaboration with New York Chinatown’s CMP and with the generous support of Dan Gerstman, New York philanthropist and CEO of Quest Service Group. We had great press and television coverage of the event!

Drill Notifications feature
The single most requested feature from our users for a long time has been to have our apps notify them when a drill is due, even if they’re not using Knowji at that time. So earlier this year, we decided it was time, and we rolled up our sleeves and added drill notifications. We worked hard to get it right, so that it has the same Knowji quality you’ve come to expect. We’re thrilled to have added this feature, and hope it enhances your learning experience with our apps!

Vocab 3-6 launch
We’ve also had many requests to combine our Vocab 3, 4, 5, and 6 apps into one app, like our Vocab 7-10 app, and offer it at a discount. So we’ve done just that and made Knowji Vocab 3-6. If you’re a teacher considering vocabulary development apps for your students in grade 3 – 6, this is a cost effective route to take.

Version 2.2.1 update
Throughout the first half of 2014 we constantly polished and improved our content and apps, and in May we released all the changes in the version 2.2.1 update which is now available in the App Store. If you haven’t updated to 2.2.1, please do so!

Knowji invited to attend KOTRA by the South Korean Government
2014 got off to a great start when KOTRA (Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) invited Knowji to be a part of an exclusive group of just 10 U.S. startups attending the 2014 Global Startup Vision Conference in Seoul, Korea with travel expenses paid for by KOTRA. We learned a lot from talking with students, teachers, and fellow entrepreneurs. It was a truly amazing experience, and we’re very grateful to have been chosen.

Knowji in the news
As more and more people use our apps and experience the effectiveness of our learning system, we’re delighted to see more people writing about Knowji. So we wanted to say a big “Thank You!” to those writers out there who have shared Knowji with their readers. In particular, a big shout out to Terry Heick over at teachthought.com:

So what’s next?
Despite a successful and productive year so far, the fact is we’re really only just getting started. We founded Knowji with a very big vision, and we’ve only built a tiny part of that vision so far. What that means is that in the very short term, you’ll see a few more apps arriving in the App Store. After that, though, we’re going to take things to the next level…

We’re very excited about what the future will bring. In the meantime, we want to thank you all for your support so far, and invite you to stick around and join us on the next phase of this exciting journey in learning!
